Origins

Szymon Stelmaszyk is a Polish multimedia artist active on the web for over twenty-five years. With a background in graphic and digital design, he independently develops a wide range of projects across visual art, photography, and music. He documents real places through Fujifilm photography on this blog and builds imagined worlds using cutting-edge graphical tools and GenAI promptcraft at Simonlab. Under the name OTHLVN, he creates Polish art pop, using music as another space for creative expression within a new, technology-driven musical wave.

From an early age I gravitated toward both art and technology. At the turn of the century I taught myself web design while roaming the primordial internet, later sharpening my eye for composition at the High School of Arts, where I graduated in 2003 with a diploma in visual design and photography. During that time I made illustrations and comics published in various magazines and co-organised online exhibits that brought together many Polish artists known today.

After a few years of studying graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts I left to pursue a professional path in London. I worked through the golden age of Flash and the early days of UX and UI, collaborating with acclaimed agencies and contributing to projects for well known brands. My work was featured in publications such as the British web design magazine “.net” and I received several industry awards over the years. Following more than a decade in interactive design I founded SYROP, an independent studio focused on visual identity and concept development for production companies and advertising directors worldwide.

Later, with the emergence of generative AI, I re-embraced visual art, finding it reinvigorated by the generative revolution. I re-launched Simonlab, my old brand from the time of my high school diploma, as a personal lab for exploratory work with neural networks. I treat generative tools as instruments in a directed and curated creative process rather than as mere automation. My visuals blend past and future, realism and abstraction, aiming to create moody, narrative images layered with hidden meanings. In parallel, I create music under the name OTHLVN. The project combines production, sound programming, graphics, and lyrics. It explores futuristic themes through an art pop and cyberwave sound combined with Polish-language rhymes.

Photography has always been a constant passion since my very first digital camera in 2002. While travelling, I document urban environments, street life, and people observed within their surroundings, often with a restrained neo-noir sensibility. I currently shoot with the Fujifilm X100VI, my favorite camera to date.

Throughout my professional career as a graphic designer I had the opportunity to work with the following clients: Adidas, Audi, Bacardi, Bakoma, BBC, Camelot, Cream, Danone, DOZ, Electronic Arts, Eurostar, FilmIt, Ford, Future Publishing, Go East, Hennessy, Heyah, Kraft Foods, Lemonfilm, Moët & Chandon, Mobil1, MTV, Panasonic, P&G, Point of you, Pracuj.pl, Red Bull, RWE, Škoda, Sony, Tiger, Toyota, Volkswagen, WBK Bank, Wedel, Wrigley
